Blackhall Nursery was set up in 1999 by a group of local parents to meet a need in the educational provision for Blackhall children.  

We offer 30 places each day, (08.35 - 14.35) for 3 - 5 year olds during term time (1140 hours). 

We are a feeder nursery for Blackhall Primary School and all places are free and funded by the The City of Edinburgh Council.

The Nursery works in partnership with the Council, and is run by qualified childcare professionals with support from a voluntary Board of Directors and a Parent Committee.  We conform to the national care standards of the Care Inspectorate, and our staff are registered with the The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as appropriate. We have a higher than required ratio of staff to children as research has indicated that this is the most important factor in Early Years education.

Partnership with Parents

We are very committed to building a partnership with parents and carers who are welcome to be as involved in the Nursery as they wish to be.  In 2004 the Nursery became a company limited by guarantee, managed by a voluntary Board of Directors and Management Committee. All parents and carers are encouraged to become Members of the Nursery (an application form is included in the welcome pack but may also be downloaded here Co membership form 2022-23.pdf and may put themselves forward for election to the Management Committee or the Board.

Additional Support for Learning

Blackhall Nursery welcomes children who may require Additional Support for Learning and will work to meet individual needs with the assistance of parents/carers and, when required, with specialists eg speech and language therapists, educational psychologists.

Our Ethos

Our goal is to provide a happy, caring environment for our children who are encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace. As a community nursery, feeding primarily into Blackhall Primary School, we are keen for the children to develop a strong sense of themselves within a community context. Caring for one another and being aware of the wider community is part of our ethos - just as it is at Blackhall School.
